Cables coated in black rubber, black rubber was phased out during the 1960’s. Cables coated in lead or fabric are even older.

If any of these features are present in your house, it’s likely your wiring system is several decades old.
Circuit breakers are automatic protection devices fitted in the consumer unit which switch off a circuit if a fault is detected. When they ‘trip’, you can simply reset the switch. However, you first need to find and correct the fault.
The old black cables were insulated with rubber which perishes and decays with age. Over time the deterioration allows the conductors inside the cable to meet. This can manifest itself as a blown fuse, but if you replace the fuse it will simply blow again.
